Pick up in the morning at the BSI bus station in Reykjavik or at one of the official bus stops between 7:30 and 8:30 to Hvammur farm, where the tour guides and the other guests will be waiting for us. We start our ride in the Vatnsdalur valley, the setting for the saga of the same name. We first ride along the Vatnsdalsa River before crossing it and continuing on the western side of the valley. The ride ends at Sveinstadir farm and we return to Hvammur for the night. (approx. 14 km)

HVAMMUR – SVEINSSTAÐIR – HÓP – BORGARVIRKI – ÞVERÁ - HVÍTSERKUR

Hvitserkur ©Auðun Nielsson - Visit North Iceland

We ride from Sveinsstadir farm along the Hop lagoon. The black sand on the lagoon beach is ideal for the special tolt gait. We continue along the banks of the river Vididalsa to the ford where we cross it. At lunchtime, we recharge our batteries at the Stora-Borg farm. From here we have a fantastic view of the old Viking fortress Borgarvirki. We continue to the Thverarett pen, which is used by the farmers in autumn for the sheep and horse round-up. Our horses will spend the night there while we travel by bus to the basalt rock Hvitserkur, a breeding ground for many seabirds. This area is home to numerous harbor seals, which we see lying and playing on the beach. Return to Hvammur farm. (approx. 30 km)

HVAMMUR - NORTH ATLANTIC - THINGEYRAR

Beach ride © Islandshestar

Today we discover the Vatnsnes peninsula on horseback and follow paths with lupine fields and black sand dunes on Sigridarstadasandur. Sometimes an eagle accompanies us on this part of the route! After a lunch break with great views of the Nesbjorg mountain ridge, we cross the Hop lagoon. Shallow water and a seemingly endless black beach on the way to Thingeyrar farm practically invite horse and rider to fly at a brisk tolt pace! This day is undoubtedly one of the highlights of this tour! Enjoy the warm sitting pool in Hvammur before a hearty dinner. (approx. 40 km)

HVAMMUR - THINGEYRAR – HÚNAVATN – HVAMMUR

Riding © Islandshestar

This day begins with a visit to the historic church of Thingeyrar, which was built in 1877. A monastery was founded here as early as the 12th century, which was demolished in 1550. Today we take the horses back to Hvammur farm. We cross Lake Húnavatn on a safe path in the water and experience the joy of the horses when they reach the dry, black sand of the shore again. This time we ride along the eastern side of the Vatnsdalur valley, past the Hvammsfoss waterfall surrounded by basalt columns. Celebrate the successful return in the evening during a cozy dinner with Icelandic cuisine and singing. (approx. 25 km)
